A Polynesian Pursuit
Surfers have a tradition of going against the tide. American missionaries came to Hawaii and strongly disapproved of this pastime. They preached that it was a waste of time and had sinful ties to gambling and nakedness. This disapproval broke the spell of surfing for about 150 years, until King Kalakaua encouraged the restoration of this traditional Hawaiian sport. Allowing the legendary Duke Kahanamoku to create a surfing wave that has travelled around the globe. Including, of course, to Aotearoa New Zealand where places like Muriwai, Raglan and Piha are part of the global surfing lexicon. Alan has ridden the waves and traditions of surfing in a variety of ways.
