Castel dell'Ovo is believed to be one of the oldest fortifications in Naples, with a history dating back to Roman times. Its name, which translates to "Castle of the Egg," is said to derive from the Roman poet Virgil. According to legend, Virgil placed a magical egg in the foundations of the castle to protect the city. As long as the egg remained intact, Naples would be safe.
